About Telling Our Stories
Telling Our Stories: A Community Media Oral History focuses on Philadelphia-area BIPOC communities that use community media resources to engage in local storytelling and information sharing. This is a living oral history that assembles first-person narratives of past events, but it also emphasizes how and why people of color continue to use community media in the present.
Philadelphia Community Access Media
PhillyCAM is the primary research site where this project has been produced. It is a nonprofit organization that operates Philadelphia public access cable channels and a low-power community radio station--WPPM-LP. PhillyCAM provides transformative opportunities for people and communities to express themselves, to learn from each other, and to produce and share media reflective of the experiences of everyday people. PhillyCAM envisions an equitable society in which media reflects and represents diverse communities, builds community power, and enables all people to access media tools to critically analyze media and participate in media creation.
